Hillary Nzioka Mutyambai is the present Inspector General of the Kenya Police, having flourished Joseph Kipchirchir Boinnet. He is the third IG under the Kenyan 2010 constitution. The foremost was David Kimaiyo, who quit hours after terrorists struck a quarry in Mandera and killed 36 Kenyans who were sleeping in their tents. Kimaiyo was followed by Boinnet, who left headquarters in 2019 following the end of his period on 11th March 2019. As Mutyambai assumed the IG office in 2019, people expected that he would help battle the rampant corruption in the police force.
Hillary Mutyambai was nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta, entering the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji & Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) chief Twalib Mbarak in the index of NIS men selected to lead key institutions during president Uhuru’s term. The present IG has trained locally and internationally on security issues. He has particular activity on counter-terrorism and advanced security from the US and Operational Management comprehended in the United Kingdom & Policing, Intelligence & Counter-Terrorism in Israel.
He was born in mid-1964 in Mwala, Machakos county.
He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Nairobi. He posesse a Master of Arts Degree in National Security Policy from the famous Austrian National University.
In 1991, he entered the police service as a junior officer. His hard work witnessed him rise to the level of superintendent, and in early 1998, he joined the Directorate of Security Intelligence. He persisted in rising ranks and became the deputy director of counter-terrorism in the (NIS) National Intelligence Service . The NIS in general, has a duty to recognize threats against the security of Kenya, collect and analyze intelligence on these dangers, and advise the government accordingly via appreciating intelligence reports. As deputy director, he is permitted for working near with the police and military to combat the plague of terrorism in the country. Between 2000 and 2004, he performed at the Kenya High Commission in Kampala, Uganda, as a political attaché. He has also performed as the Coast region National Intelligence Service (NIS) chief.
In April mid-2019, he was sworn in as the recent Inspector General of Kenya. He promised to quickly remove crooked police officers in the force during the swearing-in. As IG, he is in control of the 100,000 individuals in the Kenya Police Service (KPS), (APS) Administration Police Service , Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) & General Service Unit (GSU).
In ealy 2020, the incidences of police cruelty were on the rise with innocent Kenyans relinquishing their lives owing to this. In a Twitter conersation with Kenyans in June, he mentioned some incidences of cruelty happen in remote areas, thus, urging Kenyans to send videos of rogue officials. “We urge all Kenyans to keep reporting cases of police cruelty. I’m aware some of these cases emerge at night and others in tiny parts of Kenya. Forward videos to us,” he stated.
The IG is wedded to professor Susan Nzioka & he is a father of two children.
The top cop was reportedly hurried to the Aga Khan Hospital on 13th May, 2021 where he was then admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It is unclear what ailed Mutyambai, whose medical situation remains a closely protected secret. Hillary Mutyambai was transferred to the High Dependency Unit (HDU) two days later before being moved to the general ward.
He was out and about briefly discharging his duties skimming all healthy days after the announcements of his illness emerged.
