Michael Olunga is a skillful footballer whose exploits on the pasture has earned him a place among the finest strikers Kenyan has ever produced. He had a affection for the game from a very youthful age and has now been capable to turn that passion into a profession. After achieving significant success in Kenya, he has also conquered the international arena. The free-scoring footballer has performed for Sweden, China, Japan and is presently based in Qatar. The striker’s prowess in the pitch has made him a family name in the country and in the Japan top-flight J1 League. In mid-2015, he won the Kenya Premier League most promising player.
Apart from his football profession, he was also an engineering scholar at Technical University of Kenya. He gets his motivation from the Bible and also respects football legend Robin Van Persie. He hopes to perform for his favorite team Real Madrid at one juncture. Olunga advices up coming performers to trust in the process by being disciplined.
“There are many suitable players but you need to stay disciplined and concentrated and the right prospect will come at the right time, sooner or later,” he advised.
Michael Olunga Ogada was born on 26th of March 1996.
Before joining Upper Hill Secondary School, the skillful footballer attended Baba dogo Primary School before joining Upper Hill Secondary School. He achieved an impressive A- in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and entered Technical University of Kenya (TUK) to seek a degree in Geospatial Engineering.
In a last interview posted on the TUK website, he emphasized the importance of his education. Despite existing one of the best footballers in the country, he still urged that it was essential for him to complete his education and that he plays soccer and also takes time for his examinations.
“It is oppugning to combine both academics and soccer everything should be given its time, so I work hard and play a lot,” he said.
“I would like to complete my engineering course and evolve an engineer by profession and at the exact time play for the top leagues in the globe like the English Premier League and Spain,” he counted.
From a very youthful age, he loved playing football and at the age of 8yrs, he would play with different pupils. Michael was fetched up in Lakisama, Nairobi, and modest background.
The football star was endured to Joseph Ogada Olunga & Alice Ogada. He lost his dad at the young age of 7. Growing up, he cherished emulating his older brother who had gone through a problematic education system. He would also play soccer with other kids while barefoot, and they would sometimes suffer wounds. This motivated him to work hard.
“ My mum is a powerful woman, who did her very most reasonable to raise my siblings and me as a widow once my daddy passed away. She did her most useful to be there for us and deliver for all of us,” he told the Standard via a zoom discussion.
The engineer-as he was fondly comprehended when he played for Gor Mahia- also counted that at first it was tough for his mother to accept his football profession. It took some time and persuading on his part for her to finally give in.
While still a scholar at Upper Hill Secondary, he began playing for Liberty Sports Academy. He enabled his school reach the nationals and evolved the top scorer making himself the most essential player in Nairobi title. He achieved 32 goals in the 2012 season.
On December 2012, he entered Kenya Premier League team Tusker on a one-year loan from Liberty Sports Academy. He was then lent to Thika United for a year before entering Gor Mahia for the 2015 season. He completed the season as the club’s top scorer.
On late March 2015, he scored his first goal for Harambee Stars in a friendly match versus South Sudan which ended in a 2-0 win.
On February 2016, he entered the Swedish team Djurgardens on a four-year contract. He netted his first two goals in August in a win vs. IFK Goteborg and was quoted man of the match. Towards the end of the month, he achieved the winning goal in a game against Gefle. In the last 12 competitions of the Allsvenskan, he achieved 12 goals and came numeral 5 in the Allsvenskan top scorer flats. He also got the New-comer of the Year nomination in Swedish football.
Early 2017, he entered a Chinese team and was lent to La Liga side Girona FC for a year on September. On his debut match for Girona FC vs. Las Palmas, he achieved a hat-trick in a 6-0 win, earning him the first Kenyan player to score 2-hart-trick in La Liga.
On August 2018, he entered Kashiwa Reysol, a Japanese squad. On September, he achieved 8 goals in the team’s 13-1 win against Kyoto Sanga. He finalized the season with 27 league goals and his team finalized the season as champions winning upgrade to first division.
On July 2020, he achieved a hat-trick in a 5-1 success against Vegalta Sendai.
On October 2020, he persisted his goal-scoring streak in October 2020 when he achieved a brace in Kashiwa Reysol’s 4-3 win versus Vissel Kobe. He score two of the 4 goals.
He has since entered Qatari outfit Al-Duhail where he resumes to net goals with abandon. Olunga is also the latest Harambee Stars Captain.
In a Zoom discussion with The Standard, he said he dating someone whose name has been provided as Grace. The two have understood each other for years & in 2005 they were neighbors. He further added that she sees him in Japan sometimes though the Covid-19 regulations have made it unattainable.
“ I understand that long-distance relationships (are tough) but as long as you have a good understanding, and mutual arrangements, it will work,” he said.
