Raphael Tuju is a veteran Kenyan politician. He was a well-known media personality before he plunged into the unclear world of politics, where he continues to thrive. The politician is separate and doesn’t go with the popular political tide. Tuju endorsed former President Mwai Kibaki when his political backyard was firmly after ODM leader Raila Odinga. He once again reinforced Uhuru Kenyatta in the last two presidential elections.
He is presently serving as the secretary-general for the ruling Jubilee party. As the party’s secretary-general, he later condemned the Deputy President of Kenya William Ruto, stating he had crossed the line for holding a conference at the party’s headquarters in the absence of Uhuru. He went on to say that a proposal had been put forward to the N.E.C. for the disposal of Deputy President William Ruto as the deputy party leader.

“We have witnessed him going around the country launching the hustler movement. These are movements and open defiance to the President,” he blamed the D.P.

Tuju was rewarded the second-highest civilian title in Kenya, Elder of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.), by President Mwai Kibaki for his numerous years of service in health, human development, & public service.

Raphael Tuju was born on 30th March 1959.

He attended Majiwa Primary School & Nakuru West Primary School before joining Starehe Boys.
Tuju holds a Master of Arts Degree in Mass Communication from the great Leicester, United Kingdom.

Tuju started his profession as a journalist in the 1980s and 1990s. He produced and staged several documentaries and commercials for television and radio for the personal sector, public sector, and international agencies.

He once said that he was the first producer in Africa to win an international Emmy award for a television production.
After achieving much in the communication world, he dipped into the political arena.

Political Career

In 2002, he successfully raced for the Rarienda Member of parliament seat. During his term as a member of parliament for Rarienda, he established a major water project, constructed several secondary schools, and presented a mobile hospital to reduce infant mortality due to HIV/AIDS & malaria.
From 2003-2005, he was the Minister for Information and communication and Minister for Tourism & Wildlife. Later 2005, he was nominated the Foreign Minister during a cabinet reshuffle.
Before the referendum vote in 2005, he created the Progressive People’s Party (P.P.P.). This move was indicated to sway people against the ‘No’ movement, which Raila Odinga guided.
In 2007, he steered for the Rarienda parliamentary seat under the Party of National Unity guided by former President of Kenya Mwai Kibaki. However, he failed the chair and was also substituted as the Minister for Foreign Affairs by Moses Wetangula.
From 2008-to 2011, he worked as the President’s adviser on issues relating to media and the management of variety.

In 2012, he determined to run for the highest position in the country, the presidential chair. He formed a new political party understood as Party Of Action (P.O.A.) but fell out of the ethnicity within months.

In 2017, he was assigned the secretary-general of the Jubilee Party.

In 2018, president Uhuru Kenyatta nominated a cabinet secretary with no portfolio.

Raphael Tuju wedded Rose Akinyi on 15th November 1986. The two were together for 27 years before heading their separate ways in 2013. In 2013, it was alleged that his wife had been holding an affair with Tony Ugonda. The two divorced in 2012, but Tuju sought to make it official in February 2013, arguing she had become adulterous & violent.

He declared his wife had been finagling on him with a mannerless young man in the divorce claim, who she had even brought into his matrimonial bed while he was away. (Source: The standard)

In mid-February 2020, he was involved in a horrible road accident on the Nakuru to Nairobi highway on his way to the burial of the late ex-President of the Republic of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi.

Talking to The Star after the accident, he stated that he had suffered 13 broken ribs & lost a lot of blood internally.

“I lost a lot of blood via internal bleeding. But, I endured through the grace of God. There is no other way. I have discovered He loves me,” he said.

One rib was hit and destroyed his right lung affecting his breathing, necessitating oxygen aid. Tuju said it was a difficult experience.

Having operated in various capacities both under the communication industry & the government, it is no shock that he has considerable wealth. He owns a multi-million villa nestled in a 10-acre land in the green suburbs of Karen. On the well-manicured property runs a mock waterfall fed by a slow-flowing river. The lovely place is an actual work of art oozing luxury and class.

“I did not use a contractor. I lived through. Every morning, I would come in and watch, and I got a friend who was not settled to help watch over the whole thing.

“Everything is more roughly style than money. I like to remind myself that I will live solely once, and so I am going to construct a decent house for myself,” he said in a past magazine interview.

This year, it was announced he risked losing his multi-million kingdom after a bad investment. In a report by Business Daily, it was announced that he had launched a court battle to block the auctioning of his possessions over a botched Kes1.53 billion loan deal implied for the development of luxury homes in Karen.

The Kijabe Mission

The C.S. without portfolio is on a task to raise funds to purchase medical equipment that will update the care at Kijabe Hospital. The hospital dealt with his crisis when he was involved in the near-fatal accident as he was steering to former President Daniel Arap Moi’s funeral. In a discussion on Citizen T.V., the Jubilee S.G. said through his 50km trek he hopes to bring contains, friends, and other government officials onboard to raise funds channeled to Kijabe Mission Hospital to purchase modern funds equipment and rescue more lives.
